Steering Committee

The Steering Committee (SC) is the ultimate decision-making body for the MenEngage Alliance.  Additional member organizations can be invited to join the SC by a simple majority of the existing members, up to a maximum of 10 SC members.   SC member organizations must be non-governmental organizations and the SC meets at least once a year.  The responsibilities of the SC include:

  • Establishing and monitoring a strategic plan for the Alliance;
  • Designating one or more Steering Committee members to serve as Secretariat for the Alliance; and
  • Overseeing and monitoring the activities of the Secretariat.

The Secretariat
The SC selects amongst its members one or more institutions to serve as Secretariat of the Alliance (Chair or Co-Chairs).  The Secretariat will serve for four years and can be re-elected.   The Chair or Co-Chairs of the Secretariat can be removed from their function by the SC with a two-thirds majority vote.

The Secretariat is the legal representative of the MenEngage Alliance and must be legally registered as a Non -Governmental Organization (NGO).

Functions of the Secretariat include:

  1. Developing and implementing an annual fundraising plan;
  2. Developing and implementing an annual technical plan;
  3. Developing an annual budget for operations of the Secretariat.
  4. Developing promotional and informational materials on the MenEngage Alliance and its activities;
  5. Coordinating communication among Alliance members, and between the Steering Committee and the Alliance members;

Advisory Committee
Some International NGOs and UN agencies serve in an advisory capacity to the Steering Committee and Secretariat.  These organizations are invited to the Annual Steering Committee meeting and provide input via other informal consultations during the course of the year.  These organizations are invited by the Steering Committee and remain in the capacity of Advisory Committee members for as long both parties (SC and AC member) desire.
